A Return To Chania!

Last night, we walked down to a Japanese/Chinese restaurant with the intention of taking out and bringing back our dinner. However, we decided to stay there because we were too tired to think about bringing the food back to our place.😅 The town was pretty quiet on a Sunday night, but the moon showed itself as we walked back through the quiet streets to our apartment.
We crawled into bed early, very tired and tried to watch Netflix, but I kept falling asleep.🙄

This morning we awoke to startling blue skies. and the weather change that has been forecast seems to have arrived. Perfect!

We are staying in a very everyday part of the city, outside the tourist zone, but close enough to walk there. We decided to spend the day in Chania, a beautiful town with a lovely harbour area. We were last here in 2017 with my sister Kathy and we had such a good time that a return was inevitable.

There were lots more tourist trinkets and trash shops than I remember, though Annemarie says she remembers them. Certainly the prices have climbed, in some cases significantly. I looked a ss simple leather wrist band and the shop owner quoted me €30! I simply walked away shaking my head. I’ve purchased them before for €5-10. Most of the ones I’ve seen this trip are all industrial made. I’ll wait and see what turns up in some of the villages we will visit in the coming weeks.

I did purchase a nice polished brown small wallet with zippers almost exactly like the black one I purchased on Crete 9 years ago. It’s stood the test of time and I’ve carried it across thousands of kilometres of Caminos and it hasn’t let me down. Just €6.50🙄 I think the simple wrist bands were slightly overpriced. These wallets are polished leather with 4 zippers and each of the four pockets are lined.
And don’t get me started on tipping. I’m the first 2 weeks I’ve been asked for a tip at restaurants three times. It’s pretty usual to leave a bit of money and this has been my experience since 1975. When asked about this the servers are very unsure why they are doing it, and seem pretty uncomfortable. In most places in Greece it’s never brought up because there is a 13% service charge stated on the menu. I guess it’s the North American thing landing here. I’ll be ignoring it for now.

We arrived at the small harbour to find it just as picturesque as we’d remembered.

Just a beautiful setting!

While Annemarie was resting her knee I took the opportunity to walk out the old breakwater to the lighthouse.

It’s a nice walk out to the lighthouse with good views of the harbour and the old city walls, parts of which have been deceptively built into the modern buildings.

We are making some tentative plans for tomorrow. Hopefully they include a dip in the sea. Annemarie is itching to get in!
That’s it for today. Hoping to hear that the troubles in France settle down soon. Some of it seems a bit manufactured compared to the original issue which was to do with the situation in some of the high schools.
All good here.🌞
Cheers!
