Day 26: Athens, 20°⛅️

Greek Halloween!🎃🎃👻

We went back to our nice outdoor bakery and enjoyed a simple but tasty breakfast. I’d been looking for these sesame bread rings since arriving back in Greece. It was like a step back in time as I munched on one of these with my morning tea. My daughter Erin and I often enjoyed theses on our travels to Greece and Turkey. I’ll be looking for them in the little carts in Athens. Not sure if these are still available, but we will see.

It’s Halloween today. I thought this plane was certainly in the right mood! 🎃🎃🎃

We picked up fuel before dropping our rental car off. It was in just as good condition as when we picked it up which is amazing considering where we drove on Crete.😊

On board for our quick 35’ flight north to Athens International. Then a 40’. metro into the city.

Athens.
Metro train finally arrives. Direction Athens.

We stepped onto the train with a lot of people with big bags, snd somehow managed to get seats.🙂 Even facing the right direction!!

I noticed that the buskers who ride the metro playing music for coins seem to be getting younger and better dressed. A young woman brought two kids with her and she was wearing new Calvin Klein clothing. Interesting shift. It could be read many ways, but it seemed like a shift.

We were going to transfer from the Blue line to the Red line at Syntagma Square, but when we arrived the platform was dark and the train moved on again to the next stop. I suspected that there were issues at the Parliament which is located there. And we later confirmed this as there was a demonstration about an anarchist who died in 2024.

We got off at the next stop beside the Plaka. I’ve stayed in Athens a number of times over the years (the longest stay was 2 weeks) so it was nice to be back. Stepping out of the underground was pretty cool as the first thing we saw was the Acropolis. We probably won’t be visiting this famous landmark this time. I’ve had numerous visits and the fee is now €50 (CDN$78) for the experience. And you need to book a time to visit…something new. We will decide tomorrow.

The Acropolis on the distant hill.
Definitely beside the Plaka. These fellows have been hawking fruit here for years.
The Tower of the Winds! Our family members have had their photo taken here since 1975. On the other side of the tower.
I think this is the Temple of Hephaestus. And the ancient Agora area.
The view from our small apartment! It will be lit up tonight.

Once settled in we went for a walk about. Saturday is a very busy day in Athens! After all it is Halloween. 🎃

Our daughter Caitlin sent us to find this place. Very decorated and totally Halloween! 🎃

It was crazy busy and just a lot of fun. I sent my grandkids a walk through video!

We started on a good walk and somehow ended up at a rooftop bar. Crappy service, high prices, great view!

We stopped somewhere for a decent enough dinner before completing our circle the Acropolis walk.

It’s calling to me!😅

That’s about it for now. Happy Halloween everyone!
