Rainbows! 🌈 🌈🌈🌈

Last night after sharing a fairly eventful national holiday with all of our new Greek friends we went out to a restaurant that was recommended by the staff where we are staying. Their first suggestion worked out very well so we decided to follow up on their second option. Good decision!😋

As I watched out the windows (while packing my gear) the rainbow continued to expand across the harbour. Super lovely! The wind was blowing strongly and the gulls took to the sky to take full advantage. What an amazing way to say goodbye to this lovely town.

After breakfast this morning we departed our lovely room and drove a simpler route out of town than we had into town. Direction Iraklion. We had hoped to drive up to the Lasithi Plateau, but it was socked in and no doubt raining.
As we drove onwards we discussed strategies to deal with our rental car. We could drive direct to the airport, drop it off and take transit or a taxi into the city. Or, we could keep the car and possibly drive up to the plateau tomorrow if the weather improved. Or we could keep it and drop the car off at the airport on Saturday morning when we go out there for our flight. Given taxi fare prices, it was technically cheaper to keep it than to use taxis both ways to the airport. We wouldn’t get a car rental rebate if we dropped the car earlier, so we’ve kept it hoping for more flexibility.
Driving the car in Iraklion’s old town was pretty fun. Very narrow streets with cars parked everywhere and motorcycles driving past on both sides. Almost every street is one way, meaning a wide circuit if you miss your turn! Highly entertaining.🥳
We are staying in a simpler apartment tonight. It’s fine, but a bit of an adjustment after our last place. Our landlady told us to turn on the heat for the water, but we need to remember to turn it off before showering otherwise there is a chance of getting electrocuted!⚡️☠️ Sheesh!
Once we got over the showering procedures we decided that it was time to get in some walking. We found an interesting church and decided to poke our heads in for a quick look.

The sunlight was streaming through the stain-glass windows!

So I took a few photos.😊

We continued walking through the markets. Mostly the usual tourist stuff but occasionally we found a few gems. These days in Greece one has to look a lot closer to find the market gems.

As late afternoon approached we thought to walk up through the old town to find the city walls. We’d read that the view back was pretty good. And it was, and…

The views were good as the sun started settling towards the horizon.

We’d seen an interesting double spire in the distance and decided to check it out on our way back to the centre.

It’s fast approaching 18:00 and Annemarie has finished her cocktail and my glass of wine has somehow also disappeared. Annemarie has located a restaurant for our dinner so I guess that means that it’s time to sign off.
It will be interesting to see if the weather cooperates and allows us to drive up into the mountains for the day. We will only go if there’s good weather. Today the place we wanted to go was completely socked in with low cloud and rain.
Cheers!🍷🌈🌈
