No huge rush to get up and out the door this morning as our plan was to simply wander the streets of Kos and have a relaxed day after our transit day.
All we had eaten all day yesterday was a pastry as we drove to Athens and a small bag of mountain mix! This was the first course last night at dinner. Second course! Lamb chops and chicken skewers for Annemarie, A little walk after dinner. The Ottoman Empire controlled Kos for almost 400 years and only left in 1912. Hence to significant Islam influence on the island. Islamic architectural influences everywhere. The harbour early morning was very quiet, and then at around 9:00 the buses full of day trippers began to arrive. Also a working harbour. Plus there is a military presence because of the access to Bodrum in Turkey just a few kilometres away. Traditionally the two countries have intensely disliked each other, but more recently they have worked closer together as members of NATO.
More harbour shots as we walked the length of the harbour which is quite appealing.
And then the pirate show began!😂
Each pirate ship was basically offering the same, Three Island Tour. They take people, lots of them, out for a power cruise to see some of the area with two stops to swim. A good way to see some of the area that is otherwise inaccessible. But on pirate ships??
This one was likely the goofiest and best pirate ship! A close second! I might have been temped onto this one if the sails could actually go up.
We continued further along the harbour wall way and found some fish boats more suited to my tastes.
Very colourful!
David, this looks very close to our rental! Turkey! So close, yet so far. If they ever get their ducks lined up then I might seriously consider returning. Lovely country to travel in. Loading the ferry to Bodrum. Only one way on and off. Don’t laugh. I’ve had to do this before!
A couple more sweet-looking fish boats. I’ve always been a sucker for them.
We were beginning to think that the two pirate ships had squared to each other to try and board. Remember, it was a slow morning.😅Then off they went! My lunch. A really nice salad. There was a day here when you weren’t supposed to eat green vegetables unless they had been pealed and well washed. I think that’s no longer the case, right?
After lunch we wandered off in different directions. I went looking for everyday neighbourhoods and Roman ruins and Annemarie checked out car parks, restaurants and rested her leg. We agreed to meet later for a cold beverage.
Seriously, breakfast cereal. Why didn’t they have this when I was a kid? A Roman Odeon I haven’t walked a Roman road since Rob and I walked the Appian Way into Rome in 2023. It was time to change this! I found the local vet office!I visited the fortress to find the view to.,.…the harbour. Afterwards I again walked the length of the harbour and back. There were many more visitors out than there had been early this morning. I took a rough unscientific survey which seemed to suggest that overwhelmingly the most representative population was from Germany followed by the Netherlanders and then the Brits. Just imagine all the easyJet and Ryanair flights must arrive here. I visited this interesting church with very good rock mosaic walkways outside. And of course I’m always delighted by the colours cast from stained-glass windows.
Annemarie and I then reconnected to find a drink that Annemarie had come to love while cycling in Croatia.
It’s called a limoncello spritz.
Shortly we will set out in search of our evening meal. Tomorrow we are going on an excursion, but I can almost completely assure you that it doesn’t involve a pirate ship.😅 It’s something I saw from an airplane flying from Rhodes to Athens in 2003 which I’ve wanted to do ever since. It seems that the opportunity has finally arrived.
That’s today’s report from the Island of Kos. Thanks for tagging along.
