Day 4: Monemvasia, 30°🌞

Nice Drive!

Looking back at Kalamata. Nice place to visit and we might have stayed a day longer.

After a too late night trying to complete the last post following a busy day, it was nice to have a simpler day ahead. I realized that we had made the day too complex and already jet lagged it was just too much to fit into a day. Mystras alone would have been more than adequate, and Annemarie really enjoyed it. Lesson learned.

We went back to the coffee shop where we’d had a nice breakfast yesterday and I enjoyed a nice egg mushroom scramble served in a croissant which was split down the top middle, and of course my customary hot mug of earl grey tea.😋 Happy camper!

We returned to our nice apartment and packed our stuff into our travel packs. Then a nice note to our landlord and we were off. We’d been looking forward to the drive to Monemvasia. It didn’t disappoint.

Narrow winding roads, great views and sunny skies were the flavour of the day. Bring it on!

The beauty of having your own wheels is of course the flexibility. The ability to stop to sample and to pull over to saviour the views. We did both today.

Along the way we arrived on the historic Mani Peninsula. Famous for its square tower houses, I’d long wanted to visit. We didn’t go too far down the peninsula as we had to cross the northern end in order to reach today’s destination.

Sheep and sheepdogs! A video sent home for the kids.
You can see a couple of the tower homes in this town.
Good e-bike cycling along this coast. Paul, take note. We saw two groups.

We stopped in Areopoli for a wander around.

Things got out of hand and our visit soon evolved into lunch.

This is what we have driven all this way to see. The far SE part of the Peloponnese. That’s tomorrow’s adventure, and no doubt I’ll post here afterwards. In the meantime we went looking for a cold beer and a seafood restaurant for tonight.

We found both!

I thought that it was very kind of the restaurant to prep my meal for tonight!

A word about the weather at this time of year. It’s unpredictable. Last weekend Crete experienced some devastating rain storms that resulted in widespread flooding, particularly in the mountainous areas. Eight people were stranded in the Samaria Gorge for several days. I was hoping to trek there and will need to wait and see just how impacted the trails have been. A number of roads into the mountains have been closed due to flooding and authorities suggest that 85% of the crops have been lost as well. We’ve been told that as long as we stay out of the White Mountains that we should be fine. We are monitoring and have until the 12th to make our decision. Our stay is at that point non-refundable. There was also a heavy rainfall yellow alert issued for the western part of the Peloponnese this morning. I’ve looked at my radar map and I can see no hint of rain. Of course our weather patterns are all messed up. So we monitor. For now the sun continues to shine!🌞

Until tomorrow.

Geoff. 🍻
