Day 20: Chiang Mia Transit, sun, 33°😎🌞

Many Different Saddles!

Again it was a very strange sunset. Considerable cloud rolled in to the west in the late afternoon, and AM looked out from our room at one point and said no sunset tonight. We did some other things and then I looked out and yelled, “sunset”!

We scampered down to the beach in time to catch the tail end, and looking at the clouds I had a feeling that it wasn’t done with it us yet.

As we walked the road routs to find a place for dinner it soon became pretty clear that it was going to be one of those special moments.

I forgot to take photos of the food again at dinner.😬 Sorry about that. Too excited about the sunset I guess. It was a good meal and we sat on the beach beside a family we’d sat beside a couple of days earlier. We couldn’t place their accent which was odd because they told us that they were from Sweden. He is from Scotland where they live now. They were both flipping effortlessly back and forth between the two languages, Swedish and Scottish.😉 Their two very young kids were super active. Lots of EU families here with small children. Not for me thanks! I don’t have the required energy.

On our way back from dinner last night, we passed this sign. My friend Ken asked why there would be gasoline in bottles? The simple answer is the most people ride around on scooters and small motorcycles, making these bottles of gasoline the perfect amount to top up. You can even get your laundry done while you’re gassing up!

We finished packing our bags for flying purposes, with AM’s bag to again be checked through. We are flying with Air Asia today, and they are apparently weight and size sticklers.

After settling our bill we were introduced to our taxi driver. As we walked out I wondered if we were going to be in the back of a pickup again, on the left. We weren’t and we ushered into the white Toyota van on the right. Phew!

Off we drove along fairly bumpy roads. I tried to take some photos with varying degrees of success.

AM has figured out that these are called Song Thaew.
Beer bottle recycling truck!
The best stick shifter!!
We drove over the bridge to the second island, Koh Lanta Noi. This small port was where we had arrived just 4 days ago.
Arriving at the vehicle ferry landing.
BC Ferries has nothing to be concerned about!

We missed the first ferry, but caught this green one. There are four going back and forth all the time so waits are short.

It was a nice change to get out of the van during the short crossing. Lovely scenery!

Our driver spoke no English, and you know the extent of our Thai. Somehow we got by ok. Things usually seem to work out.

AM learning about the local area and sorting out route to the Phuket airport which is about a 4.5 hour drive.

One of four ferries on this busy route, no two are alike.
Not a ferry! I really like seeing these long tail boats. Pretty neat looking.
Arriving on the mainland.
There were two guys sitting on top when I first spotted this setup. I then spotted a third sitting underneath on the bottom left side. I don’t think there are too many road cops here!!

Some local scenery.

Our driver used a number of back roads to get around the highway construction areas. They are resurfacing the old highway in areas. You go from rough and bumpy to smooth as silk sections in the blink of an eye.

These little huts along the roads are rest spots, mostly used by the huge scooter and motor bike population.
A newly resurfaced bit of the highway.

I stopped at a fuel station for a break. they are a bit different here. Yes you can buy food and drinks, and you can also buy coconuts with a straw!

Aren’t these amazing!
They have Pooh Bear here!

We eventually arrive at the security check point before entering greater Phuket. There was no check, but drivers are required to have their drivers window down. I guess there are cameras taking pictures and matching up images with a computer.

Dropped at the airport we were about 4 hours early for our flight. We couldn’t even check in AM’s bag. So upstairs to a pub for a very late lunch.

We won’t get dinner tonight as we arrive in Chiang Mai after 9pm.

Late lunch, early dinner!

After eating we passed through airport security. At least what passes for airport security. Even laxer than when we departed George Town, Malaysia. They didn’t look at our liquids and when I went to get my gear on the other side of the x-ray machine they weren’t even bothering to look at the screens. All just set up for appearances. Is this the way it is in the non-G20 countries? AM said I shouldn’t post this because terrorists might be reading my blog.😑

And so we sit waiting for our fight to board at 18:40, it’s presently 17:30. It’s freezing in this airport, and people are actually pulling on extra clothes. Me too!🥶

AM just informed me that we can get a Thai massage while we wait. Let’s go!!

I’ve been meaning to write a note to my parents. That’s my next thing to help pass the time. Next post from northern Thailand!

Cheers!🍻
