Day 12: George Town, Sunny, 30°

Up We Go!

After a lovely first day together we had agreed to meet Linda and David at the foot of Penang Hill at 10:00. We first popped out to our new favourite sour dough coffee shop for a hot drink and pastry.

We find when travelling that once we have found a breakfast place that we like we tend to return again each day while we are in that particular location. I mean, once you’ve found a good place with the right atmosphere, tea and food, why change it, right?

Guard cat at the cafe door!

We called for a Grab ride and for a paltry $4 we were driven 30’ across the city in another cheaply built Malaysian car. Later on our return trip it was $10, but as we were all in the car it was $5 per couple. Real value!

Connecting with L&D we caught the funicular up the steep hill.

Fully loaded it moved along fairly quickly. About a 10 minute ride to the top. I couldn’t convince anyone on our team to walk up with me😅 It was warm, but not yet hot and I think that ordinarily I might have convinced AM to at least hike down with me. But not today as David has an injured Achilles tendon and that idea never made it off the drawing table.

Looking back down the track.

Stunning views back towards the city, though as usual it was a fairly hazy sky.

Building more towers on a bed of new marine landfill.

There was a Hindu temple up top which was pretty interesting

Umbrella envy!
I sent a few photos like this one and the previous photo to our grandchildren so that their parents could explain a few of the images to them! Good luck!!!😂

While David rested his foot we three able walkers went for a pleasant wander along a road where we found some unusual and very beautiful flowers.

It really is quite amazing the variety of plant life growing in this hot environment. We even saw a few monkeys!

George Town to the right and the new town to the left.

After a decent walk we returned and collected David from a shady spot and then rode the funicular back down with a plan to find a light lunch. However we first had to order another ride back into the city. This managed, we walked from our hotel to a street called Love Lane.

On the occasions when you can find the covered walkways in the old city intact and not full of obstacles and broken cement, they are a delight to walk .
The so called, Love Lane!

We were all thirsty and hungry because it was now about 14:00, so we basically walked into the first bar on the street. It seems that this bar pretty much allowed its patrons the run of the place, particularly if one brought their surf board and was prepared to donate it.

We ordered some chicken sauté skewers with peanut sauce and of course a few Tiger beers! Linda and David are a bad influence because we’ve enjoyed more beer in the last 2 days than we have since arriving in Malaysia!

We didn’t order a beer tower, but ultimately it probably would have been cheaper. We first spotted these things on Corsica.

Once fed and watered, we decided to check out this old part of town. It was a pretty funky area.

A large tree had taken over this gate post.

We came across a World Heritage designated temple which was basically shoehorned in between other structures.

It had the largest incense posts I’ve ever seen! it was as thick as my forearm.

We eventually walked back to a bus stop where we said bye. It seems that we are all still enjoying each others company, so tomorrow afternoon we will bus out to the suites where they are staying and enjoy a swim and dinner at a restaurant they enjoy.

Although it was warm, we decided to return to a few of the Jetties to have another look. Good idea as the cruise ship had gone and the tide was in. On the way down to the water there was plenty going on.

Large mosque with minaret. We didn’t go in.
There is a recycling program here.
We arrived in time to see the clean up after an egg spill.
Every one wants to sit on this bicycle to have their photo taken. It was insane during the Chinese NY celebrations!

We eventually arrived at the waterfront.

The tide was in this visit and it was noticeably quieter late in the day.

The floating temple we visited yesterday. Today with a flood tide it actually looked like it was floating!

We found dinner at Tina’s Kitchen where the four of us had eaten last night.

The ramen was delicious!😋

Now late here I’ll have this completed by 22:00. Last night I didn’t finish until 23:30, so a vast improvement!

That’s about it for today. I understand it’s snowing at home. My photo evidence from Vancouver..,

Apparently much fun was had by all three kids!❤️ Personally I’m delighted to miss it!
