Day 25: Copenhagen, Part 2 ๐ŸŒž

An Excursion!

Having experienced a very enjoyable day walking the streets of Copenhagen, we decided to take an excursion northward along the coast to the picturesque town of Helsingborg Havn where Kronborg Slot (castle) is located. Yes, yet another royal castle.๐Ÿ˜‚ At least itโ€™s not another church!

Due to our slight problem on our way to Oslo, we had another day left on our Eurail pass and decided that this would be a good way to use it. Just an hour north of Copenhagen we figured that this would be a good half day excursion if we left in good time to avoid the typical weekend crowds.

A nice harbour with the castle in the distance.

It was a nice, if windy, walk out from town.

The main gate. Quite ornate for a gate. But perhaps not given kings lived here.

A fireplace in one of the bedrooms.

The halls were quiteโ€ฆroyal.

The hall that the Queen passed through to keep her feet clean on her way to the reception hall and other parts of the castle.
The Royal Reception Hall. Note the massive cross beams in the ceiling.
There was a good display of art throughout. I took this photo because I thought it looked like the 4 masted ship we saw in Gutenberg. This has only 3 masts Note the wrong flag, and the castle in the background.

The castle was pretty free of visitors at this point and we were able to go just about anywhere without waiting. I chose to climb 145 steps up one of the towers. Phew!! Good views though.

Thatโ€™s Sweden across the straights. Very close!

Then it was down into the dark basements of the castle. Not well lit. Just small oil burners.

We met up with a Danish giant who is supposed to come back to save Denmark if itโ€™s ever invaded. I wondered where he was in 1940?๐Ÿ˜‡

A well. A very deep well!
Safely outside again.
Almost missed the churches today, but there was a chapel.

Easy to see why they built here. Total control of the straights. That ferry might be in some trouble in past centuries if it didnโ€™t pay a tithe.
We walked the fortress walls back to town for a look see and a bit of lunch. The church steeple is being restored.
Fabulous beer stein collection. There were two full windows.
Lunch!

After lunch, we took the train back back into Copenhagen. It was still early afternoon, so we decided to get some warmer clothes on and then go for a walk, yet again. Great that our accommodation is so central. Just a block from the train station.

Love these kiosks. Not so common in Europe any more.
The round tower where you can wait in line for an hour in a cold wind, pay $25 and then climb to the top. Pass๐Ÿซค

We happened to pass the National Museum as it was getting even colder and windier with a risk of passing rain. Easy decision to go inside. There are very good displays of historical Denmark and there was also a special short term exhibit about the Viking culture and gods which we walked through with active headphones. It was very good.

We headed for home and passed what turned out to be a โ€˜pointedโ€™ protest about a proposed underground parking facility at this location.๐Ÿ˜‚

We had booked a reservation for dinner at a good Korean restaurant which was busy every night. The food was excellent and the cost half what we had paid the night before!

Now approaching Stockholm within the hour. This is our last stop for 3 nights. Just wait until you see where we are staying! I hope it lives up to our expectations.

More to come.

As we stepped out of the train station, we were warmly welcomed by a Palestinian protest, complete with an army of police. Welcome to Stockholm!

We are again further north, and itโ€™s colder. I may need the gloves that I brought along!

Our accommodation tonight, actually for three nights. My friend David would be very proud of us. A cruise, right?

This is our birth, and comes complete with a full head, bathroom with shower. Guess who gets the top bunk? I think AM will be very happy up there.๐Ÿ˜‚
View from our cabin!

  1. Hi Geoff and Annemarie. Delighted to receive confirmation that you had arrived in Denmark and found Denmark a delightful place to explore. Mom and I were trying to figure out what year we travelled to Copenhagen and spent a couple of weeks touring the length and breadth of Denmark with Mary and Geoff, and Barb and Bern. We leased an 8 passenger travel van and under Berns direction Geoff and I took turns driving . We didn’t have any advanced reservations and were quite free to change our destinations at any given time. Biggest problem was that Bern was so excited to show us his homeland that some times he would give us driving directions in Danish – some times in English. Also introduced us to all types of Danish foods and liquors – taught us the Danish way to “toast one another” and the many different types of Danish liquors to sample.. He was not a fan of Sweden – because of the history of fighting between the two nations in ages past. I am presently going through my travel logs and should be able to give mom some dates so she can find her pictures in one of her travel albums.

Had a call rom Caitlin last evening. Very excited to be home again and getting rested up as she starts work tomorrow. Talk to Bryan every other day but have not seen him since his return home because of Covid. Seems to be taking a long time to recover but says he does not think it necessar to see s doctor..

    Keep well.

    Our love Mom and Dad
