Day 24: Périgueux

Walking The Town!

This is the main centre of attraction in Perigueux. The central cathedral with the amazing domes across the top. Such an unusual design.

A place to have credentials stamped which was closed yesterday. Unfortunately, we didn’t have Annemarie’s credential with us and by the time she got home and sorted some other things out and got back to the cathedral the place where the stamps were was closed. Disappointing for sure.

The ceiling.

Annemarie spent a big part of her morning in Limoges trying to get a data plan sorted out. She was able to obtain the Sim card and the data plan, but waited until she arrived here to try and set it up. It’s been a source of frustration all day.

She also discovered what I discovered about Limoges. It’s not the nicest city, and we discussed her catching an earlier train here, which she did. Unfortunately, she didn’t have a chance to go to the museum where the china is displayed, but apparently there’s more Egyptian artefacts in the museum than there is Limoges china. Go figure!🤔

Meanwhile I had planned out my day based on meeting Annemarie at the train station at 5 o’clock. However, arriving at 1 o’clock threw everything a bit out of whack!

I shifted my plans and because it was raining this morning (what a surprise) I went to see the Roman Museum. The city was once a major Roman city, and the museum was built over the excavation of one of the largest central buildings.

Here’s what it looks like inside the museum. Very well presented and organized.

This was found during excavations. Very appropriate!

I’ve seen Roman sites from Spain to eastern Turkey and from Southern Egypt northwards to the Scottish border. It’s always interesting to see what each country has done to preserve these sometimes amazing antiquities. I thought they did a pretty good job here.

On my way to meet Annemarie at the train station. I also stopped at the Roman arena site which was one of the three biggest built in Gaul (France). They have converted the site into a botanical garden and also a play area for the children in the community.

Complete with a spray water play area. I can assure you, there were no children playing there today. All you’d have to do is stand outside and wait for the next rain cell to pass overhead.😉

As I got closer to the train station, I found other evidence of past civilizations. I believe this was part of the old wall, now built into at some point in time.

And this was a very old château, or at least the remains of it. I think we’ll see better ones as we proceed through the Bordeaux area. At least I hope we will!

And then it was off to the train station to meet the 1 o’clock arrival

We got our directional wires a little mixed up, but we eventually found each other. I tried my hardest, but I didn’t actually get a clear arrival picture! However, I did get some good video of the train arriving, which I immediately sent off to the kids.

We spent the rest of the afternoon, trying to sort out Annemarie‘s cell phone problem and running errands, including buying groceries for tomorrow morning and to carry with us. We also spent some time walking through the backstreets of this pretty town.

Lots of great shops!

And then it was time for libations.

But still many things remain to be done. Shortly, we will head out for dinner and after that, we have our gear to get organized for the morning. So I’ll end here.

Bon Chemin!

Geoff😎🍻

  1. Hello Annemarie in far away France. It’s really quite amazing that you and Geoff have caught up to each other when just a short while ago on Saturday you were celebrating your birthday in Victoria with all the family and the next day you were on your way to France stopping firstly in Calgary for a four hour period and then an overnight flight to Paris and subsequently meeting up with Geoff in Perigueux. Didn’t miss a beat – may have had the odd stumble – but still able to go for drinks and a nice dinner in the evening.

Hope you had a good sleep and that you were greeted with blue skies in the morning. Good trekking. Enjoy

Best Ken and Glenn (in far away very, very rainy Victoria!!)
