Day 27: Roermond!

Hi. So today is an important day. We came to Holland to gather with family and spread some of Annemarie’s mother’s ashes in her home town of Werkhoven. That happened late this afternoon and was a very special moment.

I am posting some photos I took yesterday and earlier today. We had a lovely visit in Roermond. Last time we were here was in 2011 when Annemarie and I cycled 850 km through the country on what came to be known as The Wild Rooster Ride! Long story.., we cycled into town in a heavy rain storm and went to the train station where we were able to catch a train with our bikes to Maastricht. So we saw very little. That’s why our visit was such a good experience. I saw where family lived and had many good visits.

Same church day light view.
Wandering the streets.
Central town square. A good place for tea with a cookie!
Glockenspiel high above the square. One of the better ones I’ve seen in Northern Europe.
Guess what we found? Yes, the route to Santiago also begins here. Interested Annemarie?🤭
Rivers and…
…canals. It’s Holland!
Typical old Dutch house.
Cool door!
Looking towards Germany on the Maas River. this was dredged for sailing!
Our walk along the river continued.
Eventually meeting Annemarie’s aunt and uncle. Lunch together was very nice.
A video of the Glockenspiel.

Saturday morning market.
It’s not a real Dutch market unless there are masses of flowers!
Always fun, but no food samples? What’s that about?!
We had a lovely visit with Annemarie’s cousin and family. Then drove back into the city for a large gathering at a local specialty restaurant. Lots of visiting and laughter! I snapped the sunset out the car window.

A few mills that I saw today while driving.

Spider mill.

I have two close friends joining us tonight from Germany who have driven here for a reunion. They will arrive soon. I met them in 2014 while walking the Via de la Plata. We have stayed in touch since then, but this will be the first face to face in 9 years!

I’ll report more tomorrow.

Ciao!

Geoff
